Quartier am Karl-Marx-Platz Zwenkau

Honorable Mention

The concept for the new open space moves from ecological improvement and climate-aware planning. The car-free neighborhood thoroughfare with its variety of vegetation, playgrounds, recreation and meeting areas forms the blue-green backbone of the new neighborhood structure. New tree plantings create shady, intimate places in the greenery, which is structured by perennials, grasses and retention areas. Entrance plazas with mobility offers at the edges of the quarter clarify the open space offer also to the surrounding urban space and offer access to the interior of the quarter with the newly defined Karl-Marx-Platz. This is designed as a green plaza, as a new meeting point in the reinterpretation of the archetype square as a green place of community. A water playground marks the former location of the square. In the second row, the residential courtyards serve the residents as active green meeting places with private and semi-public gardens, which in some areas take up the existing structure of the allotment gardens.
